Amy’s Pizza Sauce

Nothing beats a Friday night homemade pizza. We use tons of different ingredients, the main one being Diamond R ground beef. Everyone in the family makes their own pizza and we cook them on the Big Green Egg for that wood-fired pizza oven taste. Try Amy’s pizza sauce the next time you make pizzas for the family!

This sauce is about as easy as it gets. It starts with a can of tomato paste, so there is no simmering for hours and no chopping. You just stir everything together in one bowl and it is ready to spread. Because it is built on paste instead of crushed tomatoes, it goes on thick and will not leave your crust soggy, which is exactly what you want for a homemade or wood-fired pizza.

Bowl of Amy's homemade pizza sauce made with tomato paste, oregano, and garlic for family pizza night

Amy’s Pizza Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground oregano
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (more if you like it spicy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. The sauce can be kept in the fridge for a few days if you do not use it all during your pizza night.

Tips for the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce

  • Want it thinner? Add water a splash at a time until it spreads the way you like. Want it thicker for a deep-dish crust? Use a little less water.
  • Like it spicy? Add more hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes. Amy leaves plenty of room for it.
  • Let it rest. If you have time, mix the sauce an hour ahead and let it sit in the fridge so the oregano and garlic have time to bloom.
  • Make a double batch. It keeps in the fridge for a few days and spreads across several pizzas, so it is worth mixing extra on pizza night.

A little sauce, your favorite cheese, and a good crust are all you need, but a spoonful of browned ground beef is what makes it dinner at our house. If you love an easy family meal, you will want our weeknight baked ziti and Amy’s sloppy joes in the rotation too. For a from-scratch pasta night, try our homemade spaghetti sauce.

This sauce does not call for beef, but at our house pizza night is not complete without it. Top your pizza with a handful of browned Diamond R ground beef, single-source and pasture-raised from our family farm in Kansas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does homemade pizza sauce last in the fridge?

Amy’s pizza sauce keeps for a few days in a covered container in the refrigerator. Because it is made from tomato paste and pantry seasonings, there is nothing that spoils quickly, so any leftovers from pizza night are ready to use later in the week.

Does this pizza sauce need to be cooked?

No. You just stir the ingredients together in a bowl and spread it on your crust raw. It cooks right along with the pizza in the oven or on the grill, so there is no simmering and no extra pots to clean.

Can I make this pizza sauce spicier?

Yes. The recipe already includes a teaspoon of hot sauce, so add more to taste or toss in a pinch of red pepper flakes. Start small, stir, and taste as you go until it has the heat you want.

Can I add ground beef to the sauce?

The sauce itself has no meat, but browned ground beef is a favorite pizza topping at our house. Cook it separately, season it, and scatter it over the sauce and cheese before baking rather than mixing it into the sauce.
