How to Give Beef as a Gift: Shares, Boxes and Subscriptions
Share
Some gifts get used up by New Year's. A freezer full of beef keeps feeding a family for months. I'm Marty, and my family raises cattle in Independence, Kansas. Here's how to give a meat subscription gift, a share or a box from our ranch, and which one fits the person on your list.
The problem with most gifts
You want to give something that matters, but you don't want to guess at sizes or send something that sits in a closet. And with food, you worry about whether it will arrive in good shape.
Three ways to give Diamond R beef
1. The Harvest Half: a gift that shows up four times a year
The Harvest Half is 50 lb of our beef delivered in the middle of February, May, August and November. It's $800 a delivery with free shipping to the lower 48. Each box holds 23 steaks, a chuck roast, 24 patties and 22 lb of ground beef. It fits in about 1.5 cubic feet of freezer space. To give the Harvest Half for Christmas, order by Friday, November 13, six weeks before Christmas.
How the gift works: you pay $800 when you reserve, and the first delivery is the next harvest on our calendar. After that, each delivery is $800, billed the week it ships. You can pause, skip or cancel anytime. Call us for gift details, like shipping to someone else's address or adding a note.
2. A beef share: for the family with a big freezer
A quarter cow is about 110 lb of beef for $1,300 total. A half cow is about 215 lb for $2,500 total. A deposit holds the spot ($400 for a quarter, $700 for a half), and the balance is invoiced about two weeks before delivery. Our next share harvest is in early February, so a share given at Christmas means beef in the freezer by winter's end. To give a share for Christmas, order by Friday, November 13, six weeks before Christmas. Call us for gift details, like shipping to someone else's address or adding a note.
Make sure they have room. Our half takes roughly 8 cubic feet.
3. A box: beef under the tree
If you want something they can open this season, a meat gift box is the simplest choice. The Signature Beef Box ($250) holds about 15 lb, including 6 steaks, a roast, 9 packs of 80/20 ground beef and beef sticks. The Homestead Family Box ($330) holds about 20 lb. For Christmas delivery of a gift box, order by Friday, December 4, three weeks before Christmas.
Is beef a safe gift to ship?
We ship frozen and vacuum sealed in insulated boxes. USDA advises that perishable food should arrive frozen or at 40°F or below, and that the recipient should be told it's coming so it doesn't sit on a porch. [USDA FSIS, Mail Order Food Safety] So give them a heads up. Once it's in the freezer at 0°F, it stays safe; only quality changes over time. [USDA FSIS, Freezing and Food Safety]
Which one should you pick?
| Recipient | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Small household, kitchen freezer | Harvest Half or Signature Beef Box |
| Big family with a chest freezer | Quarter or half share |
| Want something to open this month | Signature or Homestead Family Box |
| Clients or employees (3+ gifts) | Corporate gifting |
Before you give beef, ask three questions
1. Do they have room? This is the one people skip. Extension guides figure about 1 cubic foot of freezer for every 35 to 40 lb of packaged beef. [University of Maine Extension, Bulletin #1071] A Harvest Half delivery fits a kitchen freezer. A quarter or half needs a chest freezer.
2. Will someone be home? USDA's mail order advice is to tell the recipient a perishable gift is coming, and not to ship to an office unless it arrives on a work day with refrigerator space. [USDA FSIS, Mail Order Food Safety] A quick text that says "beef is coming Tuesday" saves a lot of worry.
3. How do they cook? If they grill, a box of steaks or a share with the Griller's Cut fits. If they live on pot roast and chili, think Slow Cooker Box or a share with the Slow Cooker Cut.
A note you can put under the tree
If the beef won't arrive until February, wrap a printed photo of the box with a note that says when it ships. People still have something to open, and they get the real gift when it lands.
What happens if you guess wrong
A half cow sent to a couple with a top-of-the-fridge freezer turns a nice gift into a problem. A box that lands on a porch while they're out of town is worse. Five minutes of planning fixes both.
What it looks like when it's right
Instead of a gift that's forgotten by February, they're grilling your steaks in May and thinking of you every time a box shows up.
Give the Harvest Half, or shop gift boxes.
